☆Even though adults should be able to like anyone, as a student, the way you see the world is different from when you when you enter society.
If you’re a student, you’re surrounded by people your own age, so you have to like or dislike your peers.
☆Both characters are fairly mature, but they’ve got a rather deep and dark relationship. I was surprised by it at the time. I own a lot of yuri manga (as well as others), but I’ve never seen my own feelings acknowledged and represented in a manga in this way before.
Thank you for saying that.
☆No, thank you. Thank you so much for making manga. Both Cocytus and Afterglow Noise have extremely deep and thoughtful situations for yuri.
Around the time of Cocytus, a lot of darker things were being blocked out of worry they might repel readers. But for the first time ever, Yuri Hime told me, “Go ahead and make something dark.”
☆In the afterword for A World Without Freedom, it seems like you were quite surprised that you were being told, “This is OK, that’s OK.”
Yeah, I kept thinking, “Oh wow, this is OK?” After A World Without Freedom, I let loose a bunch of darker works, so now I’ve started wanting to write lighter things again.
☆When looking at them now, in Netsuzou Trap (as well as A World Without Freedom), the endings were a lot lighter… But, I guess that’s compared to the darker contents as a whole. Before getting to that point, were you surprised by any parts of the process when you were told things weren’t okay to put in?
In the end, depending on the publication, readers do value more cheerful works.
☆In contrast, it’s amazing that Yuri Hime was able to expand its contents like that.
Yuri Hime has a wide range. In other teens’ love magazines I’ve written for, works that indulge in deep introspection like an afternoon drama weren’t accepted.
☆Teen’s love manga often value fast pacing.
Handsome guys pop up one after another… Dark things aren’t allowed.
☆I’ve read your teens’ love manga too, but when I did I always thought about how cute the girls you drew were. Outside of teens’ love, your works like Amadare! And Bakemono Club also have adorable girls that appeal to otaku. In your yuri manga, not only is the story good, but you really express how cute girls are as well.
And in regards to how you draw eyes… it’s a little bit different now than it was in the past.

My style isn’t fixed. It changes every so often, it’s very unstable.
☆I don’t know about “unstable,” but I feel like how you draw irises and eyelids seems to be different from before. It seemed like your irises were cast in shadow a lot before, but now they’re sparkling and stand out.
It wasn’t very intentional in my part, but I guess you can see that.
☆It’s just something I’ve noticed, personally.

Seagull Villa days has a lot of characters, so I knew if I didn’t draw their eyes, you wouldn’t be able to tell who was who. So I changed it up according to which person it was.
☆Ajima-chan and Mayumi-sensei have differing faces and stuff, huh. I feel like you can see how many types of girls there are in the variety.
I draw them with the intention of making them different, but occasionally some people feel like they can’t tell the difference between two characters who have black hair.
☆It’s difficult to do without changing the outlines of their silhouettes completely.
I try to create clear differences, but even if I go about that, I always have the fear that they’ll look the same to others…
    ☆I understand…
It happened a lot when I wrote Amadare! People couldn’t tell the difference between the girls. I got a lot of feedback that there were a lot of girls in the club, so they couldn’t tell them apart… To be honest, besides the difference in their hairstyles and the size of their eyes, they were fairly alike. So I thought I had to try harder to differentiate characters.
☆If you get that kind of comment, you definitely get the feeling that you have to fix the problem, huh.
When I hear “I don’t know who is who,” I feel upset.
☆I don’t think Seagull Villa days has that problem.
I’ll keep trying to be careful about it.
That’s the end of the free section! In the paid section, we talk serious about A World Without Freedom, Kodama-sensei’s love for Kanazawa, and mature, adult expressions.

Now I’m thinking about something heavier. Maybe they’re artisans who’ve inherited a traditional practice. Although lighthearted would be okay too.
☆Sometimes you do see manga about carrying on traditional crafts, but just why do you enjoy thinking about stories with heavy settings?
It’s hard for me to think about troubles in normal lives. If a problem doesn’t come up, I can’t write it… that’s why I think Yuru Yuri is amazing. It’s just about some good friends, with only the slightest bit of disagreement between them on occasion…
☆I thought the chapter of Yuri Yuri in the May volume of Yuri Hime was incredible. It just had two characters cuddling together and waking and dozing, but with just that, it managed to be so soothing… (from chapter 136: Sleeping Relay)

It’s really not about anything in particular, and yet it can continue so well. It’s amazing. I can’t make a story unless it’s about a complicated love or a failing job or something…
☆Stories are supposed to be like that, I think…! Although now that I think about it, I want to see you write a 4-koma…
Sometimes I write them at the end of a comic and stuff, but if you asked me to write a continuous 4-koma series, it’d probably be really difficult for me…

☆The number of 4-koma in Yuri Hime has increased lately, huh.
That’s right. There are ones that aren’t seriously yuri and stuff as well. It’s a wide range.
☆The main characters just seem like normal good friends but…
But you can see it as yuri.
☆That’s good too. In the past, there really weren’t any actual yuri manga, so there were basically no yuri manga with an actual story as well.
Yes, there used to be very few yuri manga.
☆Even if there was, it was more like a “oh, this character might be into girls” kind of feeling. You weren’t engaging with Yuri Hime from its very beginning, were you? When I started buying Yuri Hime from time to time myself, it was only around the same time you started publishing with them… I’m a bit ashamed to say it, but I only started consuming yuri manga in bulk in the past two or three years.
You’re right, when I first started in Yuri Hime, there were a lot of manga that was more like shoujo manga, with quite depressing content. I started around the middle period of Yuri Hime…

☆I think at the beginning, there were a lot of manga about girls interacting with each other, but not really any complicated stories.
It was split into two different lines; Yuri Hime was a bit more shoujo romance manga-like, and S was a bit more moe.
☆But they merged it to become more like it was today.

☆Reo and Meiko’s original path took a perverted turn. In the comic, the two had a past between them, and in the present, they’re bound firmly to each other. Then, Takase-san, a new character with a bit of common sense, enters the picture. And she realizes that their relationship looks a bit strange. I often say that I want to become a wallflower in a yuri manga, but if you actually became Takase-san in this case…
Being her would be quite painful.
☆Yes, she goes through way too much pain. Normally, seeing a pair of girl friends, one who’s cute and one who’s cool, kissing naturally in the hallway. That’s…
              It’s like… “Whew…”
☆Both of them were students, so it might not have been too bad socially for them.
It’s easy to write dark stories about students. Although it’s equally easy to write cheerful stories about adults. You realize how terrible the world can be during puberty, but once you become an adult, you feel like even if things are bad, they’ll eventually get better.
☆That’s true, before becoming an adult…
You often feel like “I’m the most unfortunate person in the world,” and stuff…
☆But that’s also a time when you can start feeling truly responsible and understand your morals.
That’s how it is in Netsuzou Trap and A World Without Freedom, at least.

☆There might be some people who dislike comparing yuri to BL, but coming from a same-sex love perspective, they’re definitely connected in a way that can’t be dismissed. The difference with bishonen is, however… well, it’s not good to judge it by this value, whether you call it a short life or dying manfully, they often end up dead in manga. But girls usually tend to have a longer lifespan.
That’s true. I wonder what girls should be doing.
☆Older yuri manga had a lot of death endings too, but lately, yuri has all been about living together going forward.

It’s the same with BL. In the past they died as well, but now, for example, the drama “What Did You Eat Yesterday?”* is about the characters growing old and living together.
☆They’re already old men when it starts, right.
They’re middle-aged men, but they’re definitely living together already.
☆During the first season, there were a lot of comments about it being an “elegant BL about living together.”
“A proper BL about living together,” and stuff, huh.
☆I thought they probably approached it with the intention of having them live a long time together without dying.
Yeah. And it’s not even like they feel like they have to hide their relationship, they just live a normal life together.

☆Hotaru’s forever limited by that, huh. In a short manga, sometimes a character’s true intentions and feelings are revealed, but in Netsuzou Trap, that’s not really the case at all. Hotaru’s motivations are hard to understand.
She doesn’t have any monologues of her inner thoughts, yeah.

☆They’re close with one another, but from Yuma’s point of view, Hotaru’s feelings are never really made clear. Even though Fujiwara and Takeda’s motivations are pretty easy to understand.
                      Especially Takeda’s thoughts.
☆Takeda’s a good guy, huh. The readers keeps on reading because Hotaru’s true feelings won’t show, so they don’t know what will happen, but because she never really voices her thoughts, they start imagining a lot of different things. It’s a serious topic. In your past works, there was always at least some chance of understanding the character, but that wasn’t the case in Netsuzou Trap.
I think it had the same sort of structure as A World Without Freedom, despite the difference in length.
☆If you read through both the entirety of both works, they might seem pretty similar.
Near the climax, both of their partners disappear for awhile.
☆That’s right. Reo-san in A World Without Freedom has it pretty together, but Yuma-chan is still just a young girl.
                      She’s a child.
☆Yes, a child. She’s at that critical moment in puberty where she’s worried about having a boyfriend, so Hotaru was able to twist her around quite a bit…
Yuma was heterosexual, and yet at that opening…
☆You said before that you like it when straight girls slowly become yuri. I was thinking about it from time to time today, but you’re going to watch the stage play of City Hunter soon, aren’t you? Someone I was kinda dating once said at first that she really liked Ryo Saeba.
Then she was a normal straight person… Wow. You caught one.

☆Even in the first chapter of Seagull Villa Days, the two characters are naked on the 8th page… I was like, “how long are they gonna stay naked?” (lol)
Because of the maturity rating, I was told that I wasn’t allowed to depict nipples.
☆I see. So you hid them behind wisps of mist…
Yeah, to the point where it totally looked obvious…
☆They were naked the whole time while have a long conversation, huh.
Yeah, they talked for quite a while (lol)
☆The setting was inside the bath room, so it was quite a relaxed atmosphere (lol) It wasn’t erotic or anything, but they were still just naked together.
Yes, just chilling, boobs out and chatting.
☆I thought it was so relaxing… I wanted to read it forever (lol) Sorry we’re ending on this sort of topic, but please give a few last comments to close things off!
We covered quite a few different works during the interview. These are the kinds of yuri manga that I write. There are both light and dark-themed works, so if there were ones you haven’t read yet, I’d be happy if you took an interest in them! I hope that the world of yuri continues to prosper…!
☆May yuri flourish…! Thank you very much, Kodama-sensei!
                          Afterword
Kodama Naoko’s works are wonderful because they realistically delve between the poles of love and hate.
Her stories are vivid and often ecchi. However, she approaches them with an austere and demanding literary eye, and she has a superior sense of aesthetics.
Her new manga, Seagull Villa Days, is set in a rural background and has elements of both light and darkness, elevating her work and hopefully drawing in new readers.
