Super Typhoon HAIYAN (aka YOLANDA) has gone crazy over the Philippine Sea… It is STILL INTENSIFYING… Maximum sustained wind speed near the eye is estimated to be about 230 km/h (125 kts) (10-min averaged)… Gusts are higher than 300 km/h… HAIYAN is the strongest storm in the Western Pacific this year… JTWC gave 1-min averaged intensity of 305 km/h (165 kts)… same as that of Typhoon TIP in 1979… TY TIP is the strongest TC ever recorded…
The central dense overcast of SuTY HAIYAN deepened significantly in the late afternoon… Temperature of the eye rose above +19 degrees Celsius and eyewall temperatures dropped to around -84 degrees Celsius… At 12 UTC / 20 HKT… the WMG eye was surrounded by CDG ring… The CDG convection measured about 3 degrees wide (latitude/longitude)… Final T# was 8.0… I’ve never seen such a strong storm…
HAIYAN should maintain its intensity in the coming few hours over the warm Philippine Sea with good outflow and weak shear… It will weaken slightly afterwards due to disruption of low level inflow as it moves near Samar Island or Leyte Island early tomorrow morning… Yet… HAIYAN will remain strong and it should move across Visayas as a Super Typhoon…
There is no big change to the track forecast… The steering ridge remains stable along ~21N… HAIYAN will move west or west-northwest at about 35 km/h… The storm will hit Samar/Leyte region in the early morning of Friday (tomorrow)… It is forecast to move into the Visayan Sea and continue its journey to Panay and Mindoro… HAIYAN should exit Mimaropa by Saturday morning…
A strong outer spiral rainband of HAIYAN is sweeping across Samar and Leyte… Heavy rain can be expected in the coming few hours… Winds should strengthen to Hurricane Force by dawn…
Friends in central Philippines must be well prepared for Typhoon conditions… Check your disaster preparation list… Take necessary actions to prevent loss IMMEDIATELY… Stay in shelters… Damaging Hurricane Force winds will affect the regi
